In the process of printing packaging boxes, plate-making is an essential and crucial step. You may have some understanding of various elements in the printing process, such as CMYK mode conversion, file design, paper selection, and print monitoring. However, you might have forgotten the fundamental aspect of the entire printing process, which is plate-making.

Plate-making involves transforming graphic information from a computer into a medium suitable for actual printing, forming the foundation of print quality. Before printing, the plate-making work must be completed, and then the plate is placed into the printing press to produce the desired printed materials.

Color printing for packaging boxes typically requires four plates for CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), while double-sided printing requires eight plates. If there are special color requirements like metallic or fluorescent colors, additional spot color plates are needed. The number of special colors that can be added depends on the plate-making capabilities of the printing press. Some machines can handle four-color printing plus four spot colors simultaneously, meeting the strict requirements for quality and effects in printing tasks.

The current mainstream plate-making technology is Computer To Plate (CTP), which controls a plate-making machine to directly draw graphic information onto the printing plate. This technology eliminates the traditional film cost and plate-making process of PS plates, reducing environmental pollution.


Computer plate-making technology has gone through five stages of evolution, from initial multiple steps to direct on-press printing, significantly improving efficiency and accuracy.
